Place 2: DIY Recycling Holden

I had only just realized that there’s no curbside recycling here. Of course there isn’t.

I’m used to a system that I had assumed was common throughout the civilized world: one of your trashcans is blue, for recyclable trash.  Here, you have to shlep your recyclables to your neighborhood center & sort it yourself.  So in this cavernous warehouse at 1331 Holden street are containers for like 15 different materials: cardboard, newspaper, metal cans, clear glass, colored glass, plastic 1&2, plastic 4-7, aseptic paper (e.g. milk cartons). People crisscross the warehouse floor with bags & boxes of bottles & newspaper, unloading their burden at each stop. It’s heart-warming, inspiring & insane in a steam-punky of way.

This is obviously wildly inefficient & surely picks up only a fraction of the landfill burden compared to more modern recycling uptake methods. But I think it will be a while before Detroit extends its social services to curbside recycling.
